Next to Wilhelm Tell, Bernhard Russi, and the Gotthard Tunnel, Kanton Uri is also known for its flawless granite of the Furka. Peter Schoch and friends worked hard putting up more than 50 pitches on the South Face of the Gross Furkahorn. The results of their monumental efforts: a first class Plaisir paradise. Climbing conditions are best in late summer or fall when most of the snow on the ledges has melted away and the rock is driest. There is awesome alpine granite ridge climbing on the ESE Ridge. The Furka climate can be harsh. Inclement weather can creep in with little warning. Luckily, it is not far to the sunny south!
