Bire Kandersteg ***
The SE Flank has become a classic. It belongs on every aspiring alpine plaisir rock climber’s checklist. The rock quality is better described as “alpine rock”. Expect some 3rd class sections. The fantastic ambience of Oeschinen Lake and Blumlisalp chain only adds to the attraction and popularity. Even on the approach, ”Biranha” demands your attention and sturdy boots. Afterwards, climb steep variable rock through some chossy ledges. “Everyday is a Saturday” has some particularly loose and chossy rock in the lower part of the wall and will not be further described. On the other hand, the upper part rallies and delivers excellent rock quality. Fixed protection is scant, therefore, supplementary trad gear is needed. The descent for all of the routes is by foot. In an emergency, “Tschari” can be descended by rappel (2 x 50 m rope necessary). Beware: The walk off is very exposed in sections, especially when wet! Watch your step! Rugged footwear is obligatory!
