Gelmerhörner ****
Turquoise colored water and white sandy beaches, normally found on the Costa Smeralda, is what you’ll also find on the stunningly beautiful Gelmer Lake. Leaving the noise of the pass road behind engenders a sense of tranquility and invites you to stay longer. The Gelmer Hut approach is steep and soon you are rewarded with majestic views of the Gelmer Summits soaring into the sky. On the way, the “Roschti-Pfiiler” (a particular Bernese potato delicacy - Pillar) lures you in to break up the hike. The steep climbs on perfect granite are inspiring to say the least. You might also experience a bit of “sewing machine” legs with all the exposure! Unfortunately, the harder routes are sparsely bolted: only the routes to the third summit will be covered here. Also here, it’s important to have a strong climber on the lead and to carry a supplemental selection of cams and nuts on your harness. Confident climbers will find enough climbs in Andy Bahnholzer’s Gelmerhorn Guide to last them an entire summer. “Morgesunne” is great for beginners and youth. For harder climbs, go to “Obrists Diechter” sector for excellent granite routes.
